Improving quality of life in our community

We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and a good neighbor. Our company investments, community partnerships and employee giving help to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.

Company investments

We sponsor and donate to programs directly related to the company's business objectives:

Innovation The benefits we provide our customers and the state of Florida are the direct result of smart, long-term investments we’ve made in innovative technology, advanced infrastructure and cost-saving efficiencies.

Sustainability – We are making Florida a clean energy and sustainability leader and are consistently one of the cleanest electric utilities in the United States.

Opportunity – FPL employees are dedicated to our communities through several initiatives, from financial giving to volunteerism and support for education programs that help break down barriers to opportunity and develop our state’s future leaders.

Safety – At FPL, ensuring the safety of our customers and our employees is a value that we live by every day.

Employee investments

Employee Giving Program

FPL employees have a strong tradition and history of supporting United Way and other nonprofits in their community. Through the company's annual employee giving campaign, employees make pledges through payroll deductions and special event fundraising. In 2023, our company and our employees contributed more than $30 million to support wide-ranging initiatives and causes that contribute to the well-being of our local communities.

Educational Matching Gifts

NextEra Energy provides a dollar-for-dollar match of employee gifts to eligible high schools, colleges and universities. Since 2003, the NextEra Energy Foundation has provided matches totaling more than $4.5 million.

Disaster Relief

FPL regularly provides assistance to areas impacted by major weather events. Looking back at last year, Hurricane Ian was one of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall in Florida. In fact, it was the fifth strongest storm to ever make landfall in the continental United States and FPL responded accordingly. FPL mobilized a massive restoration workforce of more than 21,000 men and women including 38 sites to stage, process and park resources. FPL also utilized new technology to help with restoration efforts including conducting 1,900 drone flights and FPLAir One first storm response. And, employees helped make a difference by giving back, especially during these trying times as fellow employees and community members were recovering from Hurricane Ian. NextEra Energy donated $50,000 to the state’s Florida Disaster Fund – Volunteer Florida Foundation, in addition to an unlimited dollar-for-dollar company match for employee contributions, helping the community at a crucial time. Teams held supply drives where food, water and essential items were distributed to assist those in need. Then, Hurricane Nicole impacted Florida just six weeks after Hurricane Ian tore through the state. FPL worked around the clock to essentially restore more than 480,000 customers within 24 hours of Nicole exiting the state.

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana in August 2021 as a Category 4 hurricane, leaving more than 1 million homes and businesses without power before leaving a trail of destruction northward. In response, FPL deployed more than 1,250 employees and contractors to support restoration and recovery efforts.  The dedicated men and women worked 16-hour days for three weeks in challenging conditions, including working through outer bands of heavy rain caused by another storm – Hurricane Nicholas – which made landfall in September in Texas. In 2018, FPL crews deployed four times to assist in power restoration efforts after a natural disaster, some working six months away from home. They helped restore power in the Bayamon region of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria; in the Carolinas, Florida’s Panhandle and Georgia in some of the hardest hit areas impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael; and in Northern California to areas devastated by the Camp Fire. NextEra Energy donated over $2.3 million to those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, Michael and Dorian in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
