Believe it or not, water heaters can account for nearly 20% of your home's energy use.
As a home energy specialist, I often hear from customers who feel like they have no control over their energy bills. There are simple steps that can significantly reduce energy use, such as unplugging electronics and addressing major energy guzzlers in the home. Last month, we had a great discussion about optimizing A/C systems. If you missed it, check it out here.
There’s another culprit and it’s lurking in your garage or closet: the water heater. Wondering how you can save without sacrificing comfort? Here’s some tips for you.
1. Turn down the heat, turn up the savings
Most water heaters come pre-set at 140°F. The truth is, for most tasks, you only need it around 120°F. Every 10°F drop can save 3-5% on water heating costs. Even at 120°F, your water will be hot enough for a relaxing shower.
2. Cold cycle equals more cold cash in your pockets
Switching to cold water washing could save you up to $160 a year on your laundry costs, based on the average household doing 200 loads per year. It’s a savings of approximately 80 cents per load when switching from hot to cold water and will make your clothes last longer. Hot water can shrink, fade and damage your clothes.
3. Longer life for your tank
Cooler water reduces wear and tear on your water heater. High temperatures can accelerate the build-up of minerals and corrosion inside the tank, leading to costly repairs or replacements.
Buying a new water heater? Consider this:
Heat pump water heaters are 2-3 times more energy-efficient than conventional ones, offering significant cost savings by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the water rather than generating heat directly.
