North Florida Resiliency Connection

Providing reliable, clean energy for North Florida

The North Florida Resiliency Connection is a 176-mile transmission line bringing improved reliability and maximizing the benefits of clean energy for Florida Power & Light Company customers.

The new, state-of-the-art North Florida Resiliency Connection transmission line connects FPL’s Northwest Florida customers to the larger energy grid that serves FPL throughout the rest of the state, unlocking approximately $1.5 billion in customer benefits following the consolidated operations of FPL and the former Gulf Power.

Running from Jackson County east toward Jacksonville, the line allows FPL to dispatch electricity from, and plan for, a common fleet of power generation resources that are among the cleanest and most fuel-efficient in the country – saving customers an estimated tens of millions of dollars in fuel costs.

The transmission line helps maximize the benefit of more clean, solar energy on the grid from an extra hour of sunlight in either direction with 50 solar power farms spread out across two time zones that FPL serves.

The North Florida Resiliency Connection also plays a vital role in helping FPL restore power safely and quickly for customers after hurricanes and extreme weather.

“As Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and a lifelong resident of Panama City, helping the Panhandle recover from Hurricane Michael has been one of my top priorities,” said Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis. “Nearly five years ago, this historic Category 5 storm ripped through my hometown destroying homes, businesses and the vital infrastructure needed to support our communities. The completion of the North Florida Resiliency Connection is a major step forward in our recovery, helping fortify our utility services to better serve Panhandle residents while making Florida’s energy grid more resilient statewide. I thank FPL for their hard work to provide Panhandle residents with dependable utility solutions before the next major storm takes aim at our state.”
