Safety Planning

We are committed to protecting our communities and our employees through a "safety first" culture. In the unlikely event of an incident, we have extensive emergency response systems in place, including numerous back-up safety systems that provide our plants with layer upon layer of both automated and manual protection. In addition, each plant has a comprehensive emergency preparedness program to manage all aspects of any plant emergency.

Our emergency preparedness plans meet—and in many cases exceed—the strict requirements of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Our plans are also regularly evaluated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Preparing for hurricanes

Given Florida's susceptibility to hurricanes, FPL also has comprehensive and well-tested hurricane preparations that include specific actions for our St. Lucie and Turkey Point plants.

As a precautionary measure, FPL requires nuclear plants to be shut down in advance of hurricane force winds and remain offline until thorough operational and safety assessments are completed after the storm passes.

Emergency plans at all FPL nuclear power plants include the following:

• Full-scale, federally-evaluated exercises with local, state, and federal agencies
• Routine (daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly) internal and external drills and practice sessions
• Public awareness programs, including annual distribution of vital information for special-needs populations, businesses, schools, and tourist areas
• Two on-site emergency support centers
• An off-site emergency operations facility staffed by plant personnel and federal, state, and local emergency management officials
• Back-up communications systems
• Trained employee response teams
• Regular testing of sirens and public notification alert systems
