Ask the Energy Expert

Hot temps are here, and many business owners are asking about the best HVAC settings to stay cool and save money. Check out the tips below to maximize efficiency and lower energy bills.

Quick fact: Each degree you raise your thermostat can save up to 5% on your monthly cooling costs.

3 tips to optimize your HVAC:

1. What temperature should I set my thermostat to?

  • Set your thermostat to 76°F when your business is occupied.
  • During unoccupied hours, adjust the temperature based on your system's recovery time to 76°F. If recovery is slow, raise the temperature slightly.
  • A programmable thermostat can automatically adjust settings, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and allowing pre-cooling before arrival.

2. AUTO or ON?

  • In “AUTO” mode, the fan runs only during the cooling cycles and turns off once the desired temperature is reached. This is more energy-efficient and can save you money.
  • Keeping the fan constantly in “ON” mode can cost more and wear out the fan faster.

Did you know? If your air conditioner normally cycles off 30% of the time on AUTO, switching to ON can make the fan run over 200 extra hours a month. This not only increases cooling costs but also wears out the fan faster.

3. HVAC reminders:

  • Utilize zoning systems: Set different temperatures for different areas to avoid wasting energy.
  • Schedule regular maintenance: Ensure your system runs efficiently to reduce costs and extend equipment life.
  • Use programmable thermostats: Automatically adjust temperatures based on business hours.
  • Keep vents open: Closing vents can make your system work harder, using more energy.

Important: Upgrade your system to a newer, more efficient model for long-term energy savings. See if you qualify for rebates to save even more and offset your investment costs.
