Happy New Year! What is your New Year's resolution? Is it to renew your gym membership? Travel more? Spend less and save more?

Although we don’t have much to say about the first two, we happen to be experts on lowering your energy costs and saving you money. Today, the Watt’s Team is sharing one of the easiest ways to reduce your energy bills, so you can put more money toward your new exercise routine and vacation fund.

You know what they say – there’s power in numbers. And when it comes to FPL’s On Call program, the numbers are looking pretty good.

Currently, there are 700,000 FPL customers already enrolled in On Call, which helps build a brighter energy future for Florida. Their enrollment helps the environment by controlling electrical demand during system emergencies. Program participants receive monthly bill credits, making it a win-win. Keep reading for more exciting details and learn how you can join them!

Make an impact in your area

When you volunteer to enroll in On Call, you help us meet the energy needs of all customers when something unexpected happens and energy demand spikes. Your participation allows us to briefly cycle off your enrolled appliances to prevent energy shortages – and only when absolutely necessary. Eligible appliances include:

  • Central Electric Air Conditioning
  • Central Electric Heating
  • Single-speed (in-ground) Pool Pump
  • Electric Tank Water Heater

No inconveniences, no problem

Historically, we have only activated the program a few times per year for just a short period time – if at all. The program is typically activated early to late afternoons when no one is home and not during nights, weekends or holidays.

You read that right – as a token of gratitude for your participation in On Call, we’ll give you money back on your electric bill in the form of monthly bill credits. The amount depends on which of the eligible household appliances you enroll and the season. Based on your selections, you can save as much as $91.75 a year.

But wait – there are more ways to save

A great number of New Year’s resolutions include spending less and saving more, so it’s no surprise that at this time of the year, many customers ask us for energy-saving tips. Here’s a look at some of the most popular tips that can help you save energy and money.

  • Use smart lighting.
  • Clean or replace the A/C filter regularly to help your unit run more efficiently and trim cooling costs.
  • Turn off your ceiling fan when you leave the room.
  • Replace old, high-flow showerheads and faucets with water-efficient ones.
  • Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size and use a cold rinse whenever possible.
  • Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to dry your clothes faster.
  • Cool your home at 78° F or higher with the thermostat fan switched to auto. For additional savings, raise your thermostat to 82° F or higher when you’re away.
  • During the winter, heat your home at 68° F or lower with the auto fan thermostat setting. Save even more by lowering your thermostat to 65° F or less at night and when you're away from home.
