How can I maximize my electric vehicle’s range?

Electric vehicles (EVs) have revolutionized the automotive industry, offering eco-friendly alternatives with cutting-edge technology. EV ownership continues to grow in the Sunshine State, as we currently rank second in the nation for EV adoption. As more Floridians opt for an EV, the question I frequently get asked is, “How can I increase the distance I can travel on a single charge with my EV?”

Here are my tips:

Smooth driving: An efficient driving style saves battery life. Gradual acceleration and deceleration conserves energy. Anticipate traffic and avoid sudden stops and starts. This also gives drivers a safer buffer between other cars. Remember, smooth and steady wins!
Master regenerative braking: Most EVs use the energy that is lost during braking to recharge the battery. This enables one-pedal driving, allowing drivers to come to a full stop without using the brake pedal.
Tire maintenance: Just as with traditional cars, under-inflated tires increase energy consumption in EVs. Keep tires properly inflated, maintain tread depth, and align them periodically. Check your tires monthly for safety and optimal range.
Battery care: For daily use, charge your EV's battery to 80%, and refrain from fully charging to 100% for long trips. This practice will help maintain battery health over time and extend your range.
Efficient route planning: Plan longer trip routes in advance to easily access fast charging stations. Utilize EV navigation systems or map apps to recommend charging stops and energy-efficient routes.

Incorporating these driving habits can enhance your EV’s range and energy efficiency to help your EV go further on every charge.
