What are "required" and "optional" appliances?

Certain appliances such as Central A/C are required, and other appliances are optional. The ones you choose to enroll with will determine how much money you save. Remember, we rarely activate the program and only cycle off selected equipment for short periods of time during extremely high electricity demand (or system emergencies).

Required Appliances*

Qualifying central electric A/C is required. If present, qualifying central electric heat must also be enrolled.

When you enroll these qualified appliances, we can cycle off your A/C for up to three hours per day in the summer (April – October) and your heater for up to three hours per day in the winter (November – March).

Optional Appliances

Electric Water Heater and Single-Speed Pool Pump

With optional appliances, you can save even more! You can also enroll your conventional electric water heater and single-speed pool pump that can be switched off for up to four hours per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is On Call typically activated?

We typically do not activate this program during nights, weekends or holidays. Historically, the program has been implemented a few times per year in early to late afternoons on weekdays.

Who will install my On Call equipment?

An FPL-approved licensed electrical contractor will install the On Call device. Once you have spoken with an FPL representative about the appliances you'd like to enroll, the contractor in your area will call to schedule an installation appointment.

FPL-approved contractors:

  • Strategic Energy
  • Scope Services

Do I have to be home for the installation?

Yes, someone over the age of 18 must be present at the time of installation.

What is the size of the On Call energy-management device?

The On Call device is a small, rectangular box that is approximately 7” x 3.5” x 8"

I have two central A/C units. Is it possible to enroll one of them, or do I have to enroll both?

Yes, both A/C’s must be enrolled. However, only the first 2 units must be enrolled if you have 3 or more units. The same criteria applies to the enrollment of optional appliances.

When will I begin to see a credit on my bill?

It takes about 2-3 weeks after installation for the On Call device to be enrolled. At that time, your credits for the On Call program will begin.

Why is my bill credit lower in the first month after initial enrollment?

If your appliance(s) have not been on the program for a full month or in the event of low premise energy consumption, an adjusted credit will appear on your bill.

1Please note, if you’re unable to schedule an appointment, it means that On Call may not be offered in your area just yet – but we’re working on it. Please check back later when the program becomes available across more areas throughout the state. Thank you for your interest in On Call.

2The self-enrollment questions help determine if your home is eligible for On Call.  Remember - If you’re a renter, you’ll need your landlord’s approval to enroll in the program.

You’ll also answer questions about your appliances. Your central electric air conditioning is required for enrollment, as well as your central heating, if it qualifies. The water heater and pool pump are optional appliances that can be enroll for additional savings.

You'll be able to schedule your visit with a technician, authorized by an FPL contractor. They are trained and qualified to work with the On Call devices.  We'll send a confirmation email and a reminder with your appointment details. You must be present at your home for the technician to confirm and install the device.

This program is subject to modification or cancellation at any time without notice. You may cancel at any time by just giving us a call. Customers that discontinue participating in the program must wait one year to re-enroll.Savings may vary depending on the options you choose. During system emergencies (e.g. extreme weather conditions and capacity shortages as determined by FPL), On Call may be activated for extended periods of time, which may exceed your enrollment agreement. When you enroll certain equipment, all equipment of its kind must be enrolled. For example, if you have more than one central A/C unit or more than one water heater, an energy-management device will be installed on both/all of those types of equipment at your home.
