What is Net Metering?

Net metering allows you to offset some of your annual energy requirements from us by connecting approved renewable generation systems like solar panels to our grid.

Before installing a rooftop solar system or generating your own power, you must apply to become a net metering customer with us. Complete the online application, and we’ll replace your electric meter with one that measures excess power supplied to the grid. This helps calculate the net impact on your bill.

Review our Net Metering Guidelines for customer-owned renewable generation grid interconnections before you install your system.

How does my bill change with net metering?

When your renewable energy system generates electricity, it reduces the energy you buy from us. If your system produces more energy than you need, the excess power goes back to our grid. This energy is deducted from your monthly bill or credited toward a future bill within the same calendar year.

What should I consider before installing a rooftop solar system?

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) advocates for solar consumer protection, like understanding contracts, education and navigating solar policies.
