What is the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program?

  • FPL SolarTogether SunAssist, a component of FPL SolarTogether, was designed to provide low-income customers an opportunity to directly participate and share in the environmental and financial benefits of Florida-based large-scale solar energy.
  • For the purposes of this program, low-income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), and are preapproved to participate in the program.

Who can participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist?

  • FPL customers who participate in the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) are eligible to participate.
  • The program is available throughout FPL’s service territory on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to subscription availability.

How are customers pre-approved to participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist?

Pre-approved customers are those who have participated in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). When will I be able to enroll in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist?

  • We are currently fulfilling subscriptions on a first-come, first-served basis. As subscriptions become available, you will be notified of your enrollment and projected billing date.
  • Subscription availability can occur when an existing participant decreases their subscription, an existing participant unsubscribes from FPL SolarTogether SunAssist or as additional capacity becomes available from new solar energy centers.

Why am I not eligible to participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program, a subset of FPL SolarTogether, was designed for low-income customers.
  • For the purposes of this program, low-income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) and are preapproved to participate in the program.
  • Customers who do not meet these requirements may be eligible to participate in the FPL SolarTogether program, visit FPL.com/SolarTogether to learn more.
  • Your account must be current with no delinquent balances, in addition, there must be 12 months of usage data associated with your premise and at least one month of billing usage.

How is FPL SolarTogether SunAssist different from FPL SolarTogether® and FPL SolarNow®?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program is a subset of FPL SolarTogether and is designed to provide low-income customers an opportunity to participate and share in the benefits of Florida-based large-scale solar energy and lower their energy bill immediately
  • For the purposes of this program, low-income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), and are preapproved to participate in the program.
  • The FPL SolarNow program provides customers with an easy way to support the maintenance, operation and education of solar energy projects in local communities while inspiring future generations to learn about the benefits of solar.

If I participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist, how much solar energy can I subscribe to?

Participants in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist Program can subscribe to have up to 100% of their monthly energy usage come from solar.

If I participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist, will FPL be installing panels on my roof?

  • No, panels will not be installed on your roof or your property. The power generated by FPL SolarTogether energy centers will be delivered directly to the energy grid, where it is combined with power generated from conventional energy sources – in FPL’s system.

Where will FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers be built? Must I live in the same community as the solar energy centers?

  • No, participants do not need to live in the same community as the solar energy centers but must live within FPL’s service territory.
  • FPL will build, operate, and maintain solar energy centers throughout FPL’s service territory dedicated to this program.

With my participation in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist, will the solar energy produced through the program be delivered directly to my residence?

  • No, the power generated by FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers will be delivered directly to the energy grid, where it is combined with power generated from conventional energy sources – in FPL’s system.
  • FPL SolarTogether SunAssist participants are subscribing to energy generated by FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers. Every month, they will receive benefits in the form of monthly bill credits on their energy bill that represents their share of the solar energy generated by the solar energy centers.

Does enrolling in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist impact my current electric rate structure?

  • No. Enrolling in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist will not change the number of kilowatt-hours kWh you consume monthly. It will have no impact on your existing electric rate structure.
  • Your FPL SolarTogether SunAssist monthly subscription charge and credit will appear as separate line items on your monthly FPL bill.

If I participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist when will billing begin?

  • After you complete the enrollment process, you will receive confirmation of your projected billing start date or you can access this information on your FPL SolarTogether dashboard on FPL.com.
  • Your projected billing start date is based on when the solar energy centers associated with your subscription(s) are expected to become operational.

What does the monthly subscription charge represent in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program?

  • The monthly subscription charge for low-income participants is a reduced subscription rate that represents the costs for each kilowatt (kW)subscribed. The charge reflects the cost to build, operate, and maintain the solar energy centers.
  • A subscription may be purchased in 1 kW increments for a fixed cost of $5.57 per kW. This cost was developed exclusively for the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program to ensure day-one bill saving for participants.
  • Participants’ monthly subscription charge is fixed and will remain the same for as long they are in the program.
  • During the enrollment process, customers’ kWh usage will be converted to kW to determine their maximum subscription level.

What does the monthly subscription credit represent in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program?

  • The monthly subscription credit for low-income participants represents the participants’ share of the solar energy generated by solar energy centers each month, multiplied by the subscription credit rate.
  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist monthly subscription credit is $6.27 per kilowatt subscribed. This credit was developed exclusively for the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program to ensure day-one bill saving for participants.
  • For example, a typical customer with a $100 monthly energy bill will have a maximum subscription of 5 kW
    • Monthly Subscription Charge:  $5.57 x 5 kW = $27.85
    • Monthly Subscription Credit:    $6.27 x 5 kW = $31.35
    • For a monthly savings of $3.50 or annual savings of up to $42

When can I expect to see the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist subscription lower my monthly FPL energy bill?

Participants in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program will receive day-one bill savings in the form of monthly bill credits as soon as their subscription is active and when the solar energy centers associated with their subscription become operational. 

How will I know if I will get the total subscription amount requested during my enrollment in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist?

  • Subscription requests will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon completion of the enrollment process, you will receive a confirmation email or letter detailing your subscription, including subscription level, monthly subscription charge, and projected billing start date.
  • You can also access this information on your FPL SolarTogether dashboard on FPL.com.
  • Your projected billing start date is based on when the solar energy centers associated with your subscription(s) are expected to become operational. 

What does it mean if my status is “Reserved?”

  • If you receive a “Reserved” confirmation status upon enrolling, your enrollment will become active when the solar energy centers associated with your subscription become operational. Your “Reserved” status guarantees your subscription to the program.
  • You will receive confirmation of your projected billing start date during the enrollment process or you can access this information on your FPL SolarTogether dashboard on FPL.com.

What if FPL SolarTogether SunAssist is sold out and I want to participate?

  • We are currently fulfilling subscriptions on a first-come, first-served basis. As subscriptions become available, you will be notified of your enrollment and projected billing date.
  • Subscription availability can occur when an existing participant decreases their subscription, an existing participant unsubscribes from FPL SolarTogether SunAssist or as additional capacity becomes available. 

After I enroll in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist, can I unsubscribe or make changes to my subscription?

  • You may elect to reduce your subscription or unsubscribe from FPL SolarTogether SunAssist at any time, after your first billing cycle in the program.
  • If you unsubscribe, your cancellation will become effective and your subscription charge and subscription credit will be assessed in the billing period in which you unsubscribed.
  • If your enrollment status is confirmed as “Reserved”, you will be able to unsubscribe from the program up to 30 days before your projected billing start date.
    • Your projected billing start date is based on when the solar energy centers associated with your subscription(s) are expected to become operational.
    • Your projected billing start date will be provided upon completion of the enrollment process or can be accessed on the SolarTogether program dashboard on FPL.com.
  • You may increase your subscription once per year within 30 days following your enrollment anniversary date.
  • You can decrease your subscription at any time on FPL.com. 

What if I move – is my participation in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program transferable?

Yes, participants can transfer their subscription if they move to another residence within FPL’s service territory and the account remains under the same name.

What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

  • A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents one-megawatt-hour of electricity from a renewable energy resource, such as the FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers.
  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program will automatically retire RECs on your behalf for your share of the energy generated while in the program.
  • Each REC is uniquely serial numbered and tracked in a certified renewable energy registry that documents ownership of the REC and the legal claim that you are utilizing energy from a renewable resource. Upon request, FPL will provide the appropriate documentation.

How will FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers perform during/after hurricanes? Will my subscription be impacted?

  • FPL is responsible for operating and maintaining the solar energy centers
  • Like all FPL solar energy centers, the FPL SolarTogether energy centers are built to local wind and building codes. To date, our solar energy centers have performed extremely well during major storms, including Hurricanes Matthew and Irma.
  • Power from the FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers cannot be used as a backup power source during an outage. 

Will participants in FPL SolarNow be impacted by this new program?

  • No. Customers participating in the FPL SolarNow program will not be impacted by this new program.
  • Customers can remain enrolled in FPL SolarNow and, if eligible, can also participate in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist.

How does the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist Program compare to private (rooftop) solar?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program was designed to provide low-income customers with an affordable and accessible solar option and alternative to private solar.
  • Customers will not be bound to a long-term contract, financing, installation, equipment, or termination fees. There are no credit checks or upfront costs.
  • Participants in FPL SolarTogether SunAssist start saving on their monthly energy bill immediately. The subscription is also transferable if participants move within FPL’s service territory.
  • FPL supports private solar, and we continue to work with our customers who choose private solar and their installers to help ensure the safe interconnection of their systems.
